MDL's Integration of Cloud-Based CCTV and Access Control System

Project: Access Control & CCTV

Client: Maritime Developments Limited

Location: Gateway Business Park, Aberdeen

Kore Project Lead: Daniel Craig, Security Manager

The project brief

Maritime Developments Limited have been a mainstay of the Engineering sector for 25 years. They are a business with several core values that have helped them become a world force in their field. They believe in challenging the standard engineering solutions available to their clients by giving their people the freedom to look at problems as an opportunity to add value with creative solutions. This hunger, energy and drive for creativity soaks through their entire business, and they demand the same from their business partners. With this in mind, they approached the market for a CCTV and access control system for their growing Global Headquarters. The team at Kore Solutions answered the call….

The solution

Security Manager Daniel Craig led this project with the support of our experienced team. After consulting with the client’s stakeholders and conducting a thorough site survey, we proposed a comprehensive system that met all requirements.

  • The Pass Mobile App: allows all staff to enter and exit the building using their mobile phones, meaning no lost or forgotten key cards. This app is also connected to Active Directory, meaning no need to remember to onboard new staff or remove leavers. Visitors and deliveries are managed in real-time, offering remote door unlocking and a centralised, accessed-from-anywhere Guest Log.
  • Cloud-Based System: Traditional security structures rely on hardware and, rather obviously, power to operate. There’s almost certainly an onsite server, an NVR or DVR that may or may not have storage space and can only be accessed by the Security Guard. Instead, we installed a system where the only hardware is the cameras and door controllers, as it runs entirely via the cloud. If any issue arises, footage can be seen in real-time or accessed instantly for past cases. As the cameras record and store locally, 365 days of information are always available, even if there is a network outage.
  • Unified Command Centre: Fire and Security systems have enjoyed a mysterious reputation in the past. Very few people in the business have access to them, even less have training on them and even fewer can access and search without hand-holding. And which set-up is which? There are probably a couple of security networks to access, and this adds to the confusion. As we are always looking to innovate at Kore Solutions, we installed a system that runs on a “single pane”, meaning all the information you need is in one place – the Command Centre. Let us know who needs access to what; we set it up, and the client experience is tremendously simple. No more mystery, no more multiple systems, no more multiple bills, no more reliance on a small number of your team.
  • Continuous Updates: Installing a security system is easy. Screw a few cameras to the wall, chuck the server and related hardware into a cupboard, turn up a few years later and screw new cameras to the wall. Whilst this is still seen in the market, it’s not what Kore Solutions thinks of when we install a methodology. There’ll always be a need for the camera hardware, but we install ones constantly enjoying updates, enhancing security and adding new features. The time of throwing capital expenditure at a problem every few years is over.
  • Global Access: As we have already touched on, reliance on a single person, or even a small number of people, to manage your security infrastructure is not a good idea. What is a good idea is a solution that allows multi-national companies to access the system from anywhere in the world at any time. Our Cloud-Based service allows this, and there is no need to turn up in person at the aforementioned cupboard to view footage.

The outcome

George Mackintosh, Operations Director at Maritime Developments Limited – said, “Whilst we had a wish list of technical and workflow needs as “must haves”, we were also keen to find out who would approach our needs with the creative mindset we encourage our own team to have. After an initial meeting, it quickly became clear that Kore Solutions shared our values and responded very strongly to our requirements list, too.”

  • Safe and secure entry and exit for over 200 staff and many visitors every day.
  • Real-time visibility if or when a security issue arises.
  • The ability to cover their entire CCTV, fire and security needs without the need to use multiple products, services or software.
  • A structure that moves with the times and grows with the business.
  • The ability to access the system from anywhere at any time.
Fire and security

George Mackintosh, Operations Director at Maritime Developments Limited, shared his satisfaction with Kore Solutions' recent installation at their Global HQ:

“We made the right decision partnering with Kore Solutions on this project. Kore offered the complete system, but also offered other options. On day 1 the other options may have seemed less expensive, but to have an all-encompassing intelligent system now future proof’s MDL and allows future improvements as we continue to develop our new facility. Kore’s offering was more aligned to the way MDL think and behave. Their innovative approach to meeting our needs was refreshing. Now, we have a system that staff enjoy, allowing them to enter and exit using their phones. And who doesn’t always have their phone handy?

Managing visitors and deliveries is now effortless, and we have immediate access to everything happening in and around the building, even when working remotely or from our international offices. We are confident in our future, having invested in an evolving ecosystem that keeps us at the forefront of technology.

Kore Solutions quickly grasped our requirements and mindset, delivering on their promises promptly and cost-effectively. Projects like this usually feel like a chore, but Kore Solutions made it a pleasure.”
