We’ve all got to start somewhere and at Kore, we understand the importance of helping the younger generation gain the skills they need to build their future. That’s why we have a long history of welcoming apprentices to our team. We currently have Alek, Conor, and Vlad working with our team
We caught up with 23-year-old Conor to hear how he’s finding his apprenticeship so far, what he’s learned, and his advice to anyone considering applying for an apprenticeship.
How did you first hear about the apprenticeship?
I first heard of the apprenticeship through Tullos Training and realised that I wanted to do an apprenticeship as I thought it sounded like a great opportunity to get hands-on experience while still learning.
It was Tullos Training who told me about apprenticeships. I applied online and was invited to Kore for an interview.
What have you learned during your apprenticeship so far?
I've learned loads! There’s something new almost every day.
When I started, I didn’t know hardly anything about air conditioning, but now I know the basics of how they work, how to install them, and how to maintain and repair them.
I’ve also picked up some important skills, like how to use tools safely, troubleshoot problems, and the importance of getting tasks done in good time and keeping things tidy on site. I’ve had the chance to work on real jobs, so I’ve seen everything from smaller split systems to bigger commercial units. I also learned about the importance of health and safety, especially in different environments like offices, warehouses, or residential properties.
What does a typical day on the job look like?
A typical day is pretty varied, which is something I like. From service to maintenance to install there are always new challenges
What’s your favourite part of your apprenticeship?
My favourite part has got to be learning on the job and being out with on jobs with the team. I really enjoy being out in the field and actually putting what I’ve learned into practice. The hands-on experience is so much better than just reading about things i. I also like that every day is different. Plus, the team at Kore is great. They’re always willing to help and are very supportive, so I feel like I’m constantly learning from people who know their stuff.
What would you say to anyone considering undertaking an apprenticeship?
I’d say go for it! An apprenticeship is a great way to learn a trade and get proper qualifications without going to uni. You get paid while you learn, and it’s much more practical. I know a lot of people my age aren’t sure whether to go to college or straight into work, but this is a great middle ground. You get all the benefits of education, but you also get real-world experience. It’s hard work, but if you’re committed, it can lead to a really good career.
Once your apprenticeship is complete, what do you want to do?
I hope to stay on and continue to improve throughout the trade, and learn more and more.
